Notice on Arrangement of Graduate School in 2019-2020 Spring Semester

To all academic units,

Please be advised that to enhance prevention and control of the epidemic of novel coronavirus infection, as per the Notice on Adjusting the Start Date of Spring Semester of Academic Year 2019-2020 of SUSTech, the relevant matters regarding graduate education are notified as below. Academic units must notify every faulty member and graduate student of the matters below. All should cooperate with the University to prevent the epidemic and to prepare for restoring the regular teaching and research arrangements afterwards.

I. Graduate admission

1). The master’s admission affairs, including announcing the results of master’s admission examinations, the second admission interview of master’s programs, and final enrollment, will follow the requirements of education authorities. The second-round admission of doctoral programs (including the SUSTech-HIT joint PhD programs) is expected to be held from March to May 2020. The admission of collaborative doctoral programs between SUSTech and overseas universities follows the original schedule. The deadline for department-level admission assessment for international applicants will be postponed given the progress of epidemic control.

2). Applicants for SUSTech graduate programs are advised to check the SUSTech Graduate School website (https://gs.sustech.edu.cn/) and the WeChat public account for specifics, which will be announced in advance.

II. Teaching

1). Registration: the tentative registration date of the spring semester of the academic year 2019-2020 is February 24 and 25. Classes start on February 26.

2). Course selection: The current graduate students have completed the first round of course selection. The Graduate School will set up online teaching platforms according to the course selection results in the Graduate Information System. Applications for changing study plans (i.e. drop/add courses) in the System cannot be approved until students return to campus. The deadline for changing course selection is set on March 9. From February 10 to 14, graduate students can submit requests for course retake or waiver to course instructors and departments via emails. Hard-copy application forms should be submitted to the Graduate School after the spring semester officially starts.

3). Classes: Starting from February 17, graduate courses are taught online through Blackboard, Rain Classroom, and SAKAI. Graduate students can view their individual study plans and class schedules in the Graduate Information System. Students should join the online classroom designated by the course instructor according to the class schedules respectively.

4). The following services are not available until the semester officially starts: issuing transcripts and enrollment certificates (including self-service printing), processing leave/re-enrollment requests and other academic-related matters.

III. Graduate degrees

1). Graduate students who are expected to graduate in the spring semester of the academic year 2019-2020 should take advantage of the holiday for research and thesis writing. Graduation-related procedures like the evaluation of academic progress, plagiarism checks of theses, and thesis examinations can be done online. The Graduate School will arrange thesis defenses and meetings of academic-degree evaluation committee in view of the situation.

2). The supervisors of graduate students must not ask students to return to campus in advance in any excuse or in any form. Supervisors should provide remote instructions to students, especially to those expected to graduate in the spring semester. All academic units should ensure thesis quality and urge the graduate-degree applicants to put effort into degree thesis under the instructions of supervisors.

 IV. Student Life

1).  No early return is allowed for graduate students who have left campus. All graduate students must keep close contact with supervisors and counselors. All must abide by the epidemic prevention regulations and measures set by local authorities.
